Peer Career and The Choices You Make

  • An important part of looking for a career or choosing a major is Self Awareness. With self awareness, you can determine what's best for you and what isn't. You can also apply this at the Peer Career. Peer Career is a place where it could help you in exactly what you are interested in for the future. If you have no clue as to what you want to do with your life, you may take a self-assessment test and it could show you what you think you would consider. (Downing, 2008.)
  • The Peer Career Center is there to help you when making career choices if you can't find one. As for the self-assessment test, all you have to do is walk-in, let one of the undergraduates, volunteer graduates, or one of the interns know and they will assist you. It doesn't take any time to do, about 15-30 minutes at the most. When that is finished, they will ask you for your email address and they will send you some ads or more information about what your results were and that may interest you. (J. Reeder, personal communication, July 14, 2010.)
  • If you seek for further help, guidance or just need to talk one on one, they would assist you in whatever you may want to know more about. Talking with one of the graduate students may help you in decision making, or at least whatever you consider choosing. It helped me personally in choosing a career path. I know that I love working with children and helping people, but just nothing to do with teaching related. I switched my major numerous of times before I went to the Peer Career, I am now a child development major.
  • I recently interviewed Jonathan Reeder and asked him how the Peer Career helped him in his successful career. He has let me know that the Peer Career is important because if helps prepare students for life after college and to learn more about themselves. Appointments are usually made by calling (828-262-2029), or just walk-in (hours M-Th: 10am-5pm, F: 10am-12pm, located on the second floor of the student union) and if you can't make these times, you could just call.
  • Also when choosing a career path or major and you are having trouble with finding something you want to do, you can visit the peer career website and look up some intended majors and careers or ones that just may interest you.
